অনুষ্ঠানে ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য আইনুন নিশাত বলেন, বাংলা লেখা পড়ে শোনানোর এ প্রযুক্তি নিয়ে গবেষণা এখনো চলছে। এ কার্যক্রমে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পক্ষ থেকে সব ধরনের সহযোগিতা করা হবে। প্রথম আলোর এ উদ্যোগকে স্বাগত জানান তিনি। এ ব্যাপারে ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও প্রথম আলোর মধ্যকার সহযোগিতা আরও দৃঢ় করতে তিনি সব ধরনের সহযোগিতার আশ্বাস দেন।
শ্রুতি সংস্করণের উদ্দেশ্য ব্যাখ্যা করে প্রথম আলোর সম্পাদক মতিউর রহমান বলেন, দৃষ্টিপ্রতিবন্ধীরা পত্রিকা পড়তে পারেন না। তাঁদের এ কাজটি সহজ করে দিতেই প্রথম আলোর এই শ্রুতি সংস্করণ। শুধু দৃষ্টিপ্রতিবন্ধীরা নন, নিরক্ষর ব্যক্তিরাও এখন পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত খবর শুনতে পারবেন। ভবিষ্যতে দৃষ্টিপ্রতিবন্ধীদের জন্য শিক্ষা কার্যক্রমের অংশ হিসেবে আরও কাজ করার ব্যাপারে প্রথম আলোর আগ্রহের কথা জানান তিনি।
ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সিআরবিএলপির প্রধান মুমিত খান বলেন, ইংরেজি ভাষায় টেক্সট টু স্পিচ নিয়ে ৪৫ বছর ধরে কাজ চলছে। আর বাংলা ভাষায় এ কাজ চলছে মাত্র পাঁচ বছর ধরে। তাই এ প্রযুক্তিকে আরও সাবলীল করতে নিরন্তর গবেষণা চালিয়ে যেতে হবে। তিনি জানান, প্রথম আলোর শ্রুতি সংস্করণে বাংলা টেক্সট টু স্পিচের একেবারে প্রাথমিক সংস্করণ (১.০) রয়েছে। পরবর্তী সংস্করণের কাজ ইতিমধ্যেই শুরু হয়েছে। তিনি বলেন, এ প্রযুক্তির মান আরও উন্নত করা সম্ভব, তবে এ জন্য সময় লাগবে এবং সবার সহযোগিতায় কাজটি সম্পন্ন হবে।
এই সফটওয়্যারের মানোন্নয়নের সঙ্গে জড়িত শিক্ষক ও শিক্ষার্থীরা জানান, বাংলা টেক্সট টু স্পিচের এই প্রযুক্তির প্রোগ্রামিং সংকেত উন্মুক্ত (ওপেনসোর্স) রাখা হয়েছে। ফলে কোনো প্রোগ্রামার চাইলে এই সফটওয়্যারের উন্নয়ন করতে পারবেন।

Amid reports that an Indian Army General was denied a visa to visit China, the country’s envoy Zhang Yan visited South Block on Friday afternoon to meet officials of the ministry of external affairs, sources said.

They said Zhang was holding meetings with senior officials of the ministry.

SPIEGEL: You’re particularly opposed to breastfeeding, which women are gently pressured to do.

Badinter: Gently pressured? Sure, with the help of a massive guilt trip! “You don’t want to breastfeed? But, Madame, don’t you want the very best for your baby?” the nurses tell you if you say you’d prefer to bottle-feed your kids. Do you know when I first had the idea for this book? It was in 1998, when Bernard Kouchner, who was France’s health minister at the time, not only implemented the European Union guideline prohibiting advertisements for powdered baby milk, but also banned free handouts of powdered milk in maternity wards.

SPIEGEL: What’s so bad about breastfeeding?

Badinter: Absolutely nothing. I just think it’s one of the most intimate and personal decisions you can make. If a woman wants to, that’s great; if not, that’s fine, too. That’s none of the politicians’ business. Unfortunately, France has adopted the World Health Organization directive stating that children should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months and, if possible, for 12 more months with supplementary foods. These guidelines make sense in developing countries where people have had bad experiences with powdered milk and contaminated water. But why in God’s name should this be applied to women in Paris and Berlin? That catapults us back to our grandmothers’ era.

Even during this economic crisis, more and more women are opting to stay at home. And this includes many highly trained women who now only want to be the perfect mother.

SPIEGEL: Not every woman wants to continue furthering the cause of emancipation once she’s become a mother.

Badinter: Sure, but there’s two other things that concern every woman in the West — and very personally so. First, half of all couples split up within three to seven years. So, that means a woman who has spent years without a firm spot in the job market and whose economic future is in great danger is suddenly left alone and has to care for her child and herself. Second, the active part of raising a child consumes about 10 to 15 years of your entire life, but the average life expectancy for a woman is now over 80. Should women be expected to devote their entire lives just to raising kids? What happens afterwards, when the kids have left home, and maybe your husband, too? What then?

Thousands of students at Dhaka University (DU) fought running battles with police last night demanding removal of an army camp from the campus and an apology from the army for beating up three students earlier in the afternoon.

More than 150 students and four police were injured in the confrontations in which police fired rubber bullets and tear gas canisters as well as using water cannons and repeated baton charges. Students pelted police with stones and bricks.

Chief of Army Staff Gen Moeen U Ahmed yesterday blamed bankers for creating panic among businessmen, and termed the bankers’ style of dealing with their clients since the declaration of the state of emergency as ‘nothing else but blackmailing’.

“Bankers are responsible for creating panic among the business community. I even heard that some bankers have been threatening their clients with disclosures of their account information since the declaration of the state of emergency,” Gen Moeen said while addressing members of the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB), a forum of bank owners.

There are some important lessons to be learnt from the disturbances at Dhaka University. It is clear that the army must go for a serious rethinking on how it should relate to the broad civilian population. Such rethinking must include the camps that have been set up in civilian population centres all over the country. Owing to the state of emergency and the resultant involvement of the army in a variety of activities — administration, law and order, et al — its leadership must devise a mode of engagement with the public that will have no room for any misunderstanding. After the ugly incident at DU, provoked by the behaviour of a few soldiers, it is necessary that the army go for not just damage control but also ensuring that such incidents do not happen again. There is always a distinction between the army as an institution and soldiers as individuals. Sometimes the questionable individual attitudes of ordinary soldiers undermine the reputation of the army as an institution. That being the reality, we would urge the army high command to revisit the entire issue of civil-military relations. It is particularly important because army camps are located outside the cantonments. Under no circumstances should the ties between the army and the civilian population be allowed to deteriorate.

REACTIONS
In a statement yesterday, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon and General Secretary Bimol Biswas called on the caretaker government to release the teachers immediately.

JSD President Hasanul Haque Inu and General Secretary Syed Zafar Sajjad expressed concern at the ‘arrest’ of the senior academics.

Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal Convener Khalequzzaman also demanded release of the teachers.

Colonel Taher Sangsad and Bangladesh Chhatra Union, the student wing of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), also deplored the ‘arrests’.

Taher Sangsad President Kamal Lohani and General Secretary Advocate Ruhul Kuddus Babu in a statement said taking the DU professors to unknown places instead of the concerned police station was a breach of law and their fundamental rights.

Anwar Hossain’s son Sanjeev Hossain, who met his father at the court, quoting his father, told reporters, “He (Anwar) was kept at the intelligence agencies’ black hole. He was tortured not only psychologically but also physically.”

“We were not prepared to hear that our father was tortured physically,” Sanjeev said adding, “We received the news that he will be taken into remand. If he were taken to jail, at least no one would hurt him there. But now it’s all uncertain.”

“We are seriously concerned because we do not know where our father will be taken to for the next four days,” he said.

Harun-or-Rashid’s son Ishtiaque Rashid told reporters that he found his father exhausted when he met him.

He said, “Of course we are concerned. If teachers are treated this way and taken into remand then no one is safe and we are concerned about our own security.”

“If they treat teachers like this, how would they treat ordinary citizens?”

“But the design could not succeed as we were vigilant. Their plan to destabilise the situation and undermine the government has been foiled,” said Gen Moeen justifying the imposition of curfew on Wednesday night in Dhaka and five other cities.

The intelligence agencies are investigating to find out the evil force engaged in creating anarchy and undermining the image of the government, he added.

The news that the two senior teachers of Dhaka University, Prof. Anwar Hossain and Prof. Harun-or-Rashid, both of whom are already in custody, have been shown arrested in yet another case and placed on remand for four more days is disconcerting. We are further concerned to learn that the teachers have told before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court that they have been subjected to mental torture during interrogation following their arrest.

It needs to be said that when the law enforcing authorities have been successful in defusing the situation within a short time and without any loss of life, detaining the Dhaka University teachers for such a long time would smudge their achievement to some extent. Furthermore, the public apology that has come from Prof. Anwar Hossain for the unfortunate incident on the campus should be viewed with compassion and seized as an opportunity to find ways to forget and forgive and work jointly towards establishing peace. In the melee, we must not be forgetful of the loss of academic hours of the general students.

In the six years that I was blessed to be her physician, I found Mother to be a simple, unassuming lady who ate very little and complained even less. Even when she was admitted at the BM Birla Heart Research Centre, Mother would never say what was troubling her health-wise. We often got inputs from the sisters. A model patient, Mother would bear her pain silently, letting the doctors do their task.

She was criticised for conversion. Yet in all the 23 years I knew her she never once whispered a suggestion regarding conversion. However, I asked her if she did convert. Without a moment’s hesitation, she said, “I convert. I convert you to be a better Hindu, a better Muslim, a better Protestant, and a better Sikh. Once you have found God, it is up to you to do with him as you wish.” While she never deviated an inch from her path and was a religious, not a social worker, she was quick to realise that in India, Catholicism was practised by a small segment, and the 19th century proselytising approach could not be sustained.

From her humblest beginning in the slums and streets, she reached out to alleviate the problem she encountered by the simplest and most straightforward means available to her. Her thinking was both simple and complex: when asked how she could touch a leprosy sufferer and clean his sores, she said she could do it because for her that man was the suffering Jesus. “I would not clean him for all the money in the world,” said an observer. “Nor would I,” Mother Teresa replied, “but I would do it for love of Him.”

এ বিষয়ে আমার দুটি অনুরোধ বা অন্যায় আবদার আছে।

১.কালপঞ্জি আমার খুব প্রিয়, কাজেই কেউ পৃথিবীতে কয়বছর ধরে আছেন এবিষয়ে আমার অযাচিত আগ্রহ আছে। ধরুন আপনি পৃথিবীতে ১৯৫২ সাল থেকে আছেন, তাহলে আপনার জীবদ্দশায় কী কী ঘটেছে তার সাথে মিলিয়ে আপনাকে ভাবতে আমার ভাল লাগে। সেক্ষেত্রে আমার অনুরোধ ‘ডিএনএ’ পরীক্ষা করে খালেদা জিয়া সঠিক কোন কছর থেকে পৃথিবীতে আছেন তা বের করা হোক। কারণ সবচেয়ে খারাপ যেটা হয়েছে তার জন্মবর্ষ এখন ১৯৪৪-১৯৪৭ পর্যন্ত বিরাজ করছে, কালপঞ্জির খালেদাকে ভাবতে আমার অসুবিধা হচ্ছে।

২. খালেদার মতো এক অতি অসাধারণ ব্যক্তিত্ব ও বাংলাদেশের শ্রেষ্ঠতম অঘটনঘটনপটিয়সী ১০/১১ বছর ধরে ওই ১৫ আগস্টে জন্মদিন পালন করছেন এটা খুবই দু:খজনক। আমাদের সবার উচিত তাকে প্রতিবছর নতুন নতুন দিনে জন্মদিন পালন করতে উৎসাহ দেয়া।

এক্ষেত্রে আমি আগস্ট মাসকে তার জন্মমাস ধরে আরো কিছুদিনে তার জন্মদিন পালন করার প্রস্তাব করছি : ১২ আগস্ট হুমায়ুন আজাদের মৃত্যুদিনে তিনি জন্মদিন পালন করতে পারেন, ১৫ আগস্ট তো আছেই ( তবে এনিয়ে মতভেদ আছে, অনেকে মনে করেন শেখ মুজিব হত্যাদিবসে তিনি জন্মদিন পালন করেন, এটা কিন্তু ঠিক নয়। উনি ‘বিএনপি’র জন্মদিনে জন্মদিন পালন করেন। মহাকালের হিসেবে ১ সেপ্টেম্বর ১৯৭৮ ‘বিএনপি’র জন্মদিন নয়, ১৫ আগস্ট ১৯৭৫ ‘বিএনপি’র জন্মদিন), ১৭ আগস্ট সারাদেশে একযোগে বোমাবিস্ফোরণের ২০০৫-এর মহাঘটনার স্মরণে এদিন তিনি জন্মদিন পালন করতে পারেন, ২১ আগস্ট শেখ হাসিনাকে হত্যাপ্রচেষ্টার ২০০৪ সালের গ্রেনেড হামলাকে উদযাপন করতে তিনি এদিন জন্মদিন পালন করতে পারেন।

আর সবশেষে ট্রাজেডির কথা বলবই। জন্মিলে মরিতে হইবেই, সে আমাদের অতি অসাধারণ খালেদাকেও মরতে হবে। আমি তার মৃত্যু কোনো এক আসছে বছরের ১৫ আগস্ট কামনা করি। অন্য কোনো মাসের অন্য কোনোদিন মারা গেলে বড়জোর ১/২ বছর তাকে লোকে মনে রাখবে, কিন্তু শেখ মুজিব তো অমর, ১৫ আগস্টে মারা গেলে অন্তত লোকে এই বলে তাকে অনেকদিন মনে রাখবে, এই মহিলা এইদিনে তার জন্মদিন পালন করত।
